THE HIDDEN YEARS:

WILDERNESS

Book 3:
Wilderness
Growing in Wisdom and Grace

by Rosanne Markham

Scripture tells us little about the middle years of Jesus and John the Baptist — only that they grew in wisdom and stature, and that John lived in the wilderness. Book 3 follows both men through those unrecorded years, tracing the experiences, relationships, and religious movements that shaped their callings.

Their stories intersect in unexpected ways. John’s formation among the Essenes of Bethany and his later life as a Nazarite give him the theological urgency and purity framework that will define his proclamation. Jesus moves through the same world differently — drawn to the poor, the sick, and the outcast — his compassion deepened by what he has witnessed and who he has loved. Together, their paths converge toward a moment neither fully understands yet both are being prepared to meet.

The book also answers what became of Joseph. It continues Mary’s story—her wisdom, her grief, and her steady hand in raising a family during an era of Roman occupation and political violence. That darkness is not background; it is the world into which a ministry of radical love was born.
